Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, Catholic church in central Cadiz, Spain.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced is a Catholic church in central Cadiz with a central nave, side chapels, and a dome supported by the transept structure. A tower on the gospel side distinguishes the building's exterior appearance.
The Mercedarian Order built the original structure starting in 1629 and completed it in 1638 after obtaining local permits. A fire in 1936 destroyed the entire building, but it was later rebuilt and reconsecrated by Bishop Tomás Gutiérrez Díez in 1948.
The church belongs to the Diocese of Cadiz and Ceuta and serves as an active parish in the historic city center. It remains an important gathering place for local worshippers and part of the spiritual life in the neighborhood.
The building is located in the city center and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should be aware that regular services take place here, particularly on holidays, so visiting hours may vary accordingly.
The building is one of few civic structures that survived the devastation of the Civil War and was later faithfully restored to its original form. The reconstruction preserves the original architectural beauty despite the severe damage it sustained.
