Cruceiro do Hío, Wayside cross at Santo André do Hío, Spain
Cruceiro do Hío is a monumental granite cross standing in the church square of Santo André do Hío, carved with intricate biblical scenes across its surface. Constructed primarily from a single stone block, it dominates the square with its substantial presence and detailed stonework.
Master stonemasons José Cerviño García and Ignacio Cerviño Quinteiro carved this monumental cross from a single granite block in 1872. Their craftsmanship established a landmark that has defined the church grounds ever since.
The cross displays biblical scenes spanning from creation to redemption, telling the story of Christian salvation through carved images. These carved scenes serve as a visual narrative that pilgrims and visitors encounter as they walk around the monument.
The cross stands in the church square and is easily reached on foot, protected by metal railings that outline the space. Visitors should arrive in early morning or late afternoon hours when the square is less crowded.
The pedestal features four angels as supporting figures with niches depicting souls in purgatory carved into its base. The shaft notably displays the Virgin standing upon a dragon, a striking iconographic element among the carving details.
