The Ermita de Santa Caterina stands at 160 meters elevation, featuring a chapel, upper rooms, and underground chambers behind the main worship area.
Three monks from Montserrat founded the hermitage in 1392 after leaving their monastery during the Western Schism crisis in the Catholic Church.
The annual Aplec de Santa Caterina celebration on November 25 brings together local residents who credit the saint for protecting the town from diseases.
Visitors can reach the hermitage through a 45-minute walking path from Torroella or drive via the old road from Ullà to Bellcaire d'Empordà.
The hermitage contains decorative tiles from Manises workshops depicting attributes of Saint Catherine's martyrdom, donated by a notable Torroella family.
