Villa romana de El Ruedo, Roman archaeological site in Almedinilla, Spain
Villa romana de El Ruedo is an excavated Roman country estate with residential rooms organized around a courtyard featuring mosaic floors and marble finishes. Adjacent to these are work buildings and storage spaces that show how farming and livestock were managed.
The villa started in the 1st century as a simple farming settlement and underwent multiple building campaigns. Through several construction phases it grew into a large estate that remained occupied for several centuries.
The site displays clearly separated areas for the owner's daily life and agricultural work. This division reveals much about how wealthy Roman families organized their time and demonstrated their status through spatial arrangement.
The site has limited visiting hours and is best explored with a guide to understand the different areas and their purposes. The path through the ruins is somewhat uneven, so wearing comfortable shoes is advisable.
Excavations uncovered a bronze statue of Hypnos, an extremely rare representation from the Roman world. This statue is one of few surviving examples of the artistic decoration found in private villas in this region.
