Castell de Sant Ferran

Castell de Sant Ferran is a baroque fortress in Berga that stands on a hilltop overlooking the town. The structure features defensive walls and buildings from the baroque period, built upon older fortified foundations.

The fortress was built upon the remains of an ancient Iberian fortification called Castrum Vergium, which Roman writers documented in the 2nd century BC. The baroque construction came later and shaped the site's present appearance.

The fortress serves as the seat of the Regional Council of Berguedà, maintaining its role as an administrative center for the local community. It remains an important place for regional affairs and continues to be central to local identity.

The climb to the fortress follows Carrer de la Pujada del Castell street, which connects from the town below. Parking facilities are available near the entrance, making the visit convenient.

A preserved wall section from the medieval phase shows stone layers bonded with mortar. This ancient construction method reveals the craftsmanship techniques used in earlier times.
