Berga, Mountain municipality in Berguedà, Spain
Berga is a municipality in the comarca of Berguedà within Barcelona province, Catalonia, sitting at 704 meters (2,310 feet) above sea level. The town is surrounded by mountains and serves as a gateway to the valleys and hiking routes of the Pyrenean foothills.
The name of the town comes from the Bergistani tribe who lived here before Hannibal passed through the area in 218 BC. The population later resisted Roman rule and fought in several uprisings to maintain their independence.
La Patum, a festival rooted in medieval times, fills the streets with processions where dancers wear costumes and drums set the rhythm. This tradition has been recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, showing how deeply it is woven into the life of the community.
The municipality lies about a two-hour drive north of Barcelona and is well connected by bus services. The central bus terminal serves as a starting point for excursions into the surrounding valleys and mountain areas.
In 2010, the first street in the world dedicated entirely to free software was inaugurated here. This project made the municipality a pioneer in digital freedom and open technology.
