Pont de Pedret, Gothic bridge in Cercs, Spain
Pont de Pedret is a Gothic sandstone bridge in Cercs, in the Catalan province of Barcelona, spanning the Llobregat River on several arches. The structure runs about 60 meters (197 ft) from bank to bank and is open to pedestrians only.
The bridge was built in the early 15th century, replacing older and less stable crossings over the Llobregat. Over time it was listed as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest, which brought it under official protection.
The name Pedret refers to an old hamlet nearby that has nearly disappeared over time, though the bridge keeps its memory alive. Locals and walkers from the area still use it as a crossing point, and the worn stone surface shows how much foot traffic it has seen over the centuries.
The bridge is open to foot traffic only and sits in a quiet stretch of the Llobregat valley, which makes it a good stop on a walking route. The sandstone surface can become slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before crossing.
Although sandstone is a relatively soft rock, the bridge has withstood centuries of Llobregat floodwaters without collapsing. The arches are shaped so that fast-moving water flows around the piers rather than pushing directly against them.
