Villavieja Historical Site, Archaeological site in Fuentes de Cesna, Spain
Villavieja is an archaeological site occupying three hectares atop a plateau in the region. A substantial stone wall, roughly 300 meters long, surrounds the ancient settlement and remains clearly visible today.
The settlement was established around 4,500 years ago during the Copper Age as a fortified outpost. Excavations beginning in 2012 have progressively uncovered evidence of this important early location in regional history.
The site reveals how people organized their daily lives within the fortified settlement thousands of years ago. Pottery, tools, and bones scattered across the excavation offer glimpses into their routines and survival practices.
The site lies roughly one kilometer from Cortijo El Morrón and is reachable on foot or by vehicle. Visitors should know that walking paths cross the archaeological grounds and are generally open for exploration.
This is the only prehistoric fortified settlement in Granada province whose walls are clearly visible from the air. The stone structure creates a distinctive geometric pattern that becomes apparent when viewed from above.
