Commerce Building, Art Nouveau building in Nalkala, Tampere, Finland
The Commerce Building is a five-story Art Nouveau structure at the corner of Aleksis Kiven katu and Hämeenkatu in central Tampere. It combines residential units in the upper floors with retail spaces on the ground floor, representing the mixed-use design typical of Tampere's historic commercial quarter.
The building was designed in 1899 by the Helsinki architecture firm Andersin, Jung ja Bomanson for residential and commercial use. It emerged during a period when Tampere's center was expanding rapidly and structures like this defined the era's new architectural approach.
The building shows how residential and commercial spaces merged in early 20th-century urban design, reflecting how Tampere's center developed. Visitors can observe how the ground-floor shops and upper apartments work together to shape daily street life.
The building sits at a busy intersection in the city center and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors should expect active ground-floor shops and will be able to view the facade clearly from street level.
The ground floor housed Finland's first McDonald's restaurant, operating there from 1984 to 2015. A serious grease fire in 2010 caused significant damage, but the building was fully restored and rebuilt to its original condition.
