Tampere Old City Hall, Town hall in Central Square, Finland
Tampere Old City Hall is a public building in Renaissance Revival style located on the edge of the Central Square in Tampere, Finland. Its facade is articulated with classical ornamental details, and the interior holds several halls that once served municipal, judicial, and police functions.
Georg Schreck completed the building in 1890, and it was originally designed to bring together municipal offices, courts, and police operations under one roof. It later found itself at the center of events during the 1918 civil war battles fought in Tampere.
The balcony facing the square is where public announcements were once read aloud to crowds below. Today the building hosts official ceremonies that mark important moments in the city's civic life.
The building sits right on the Central Square and is easy to spot and reach on foot from anywhere in the city center. Access inside is generally limited to official events and ceremonies, so it is worth checking in advance before planning a visit.
Bullet holes from the 1918 fighting are still visible on the main staircase, left there when the building served as a last defensive position during the urban battles. They have never been filled in, and a visitor can observe them directly during an access visit.
