Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, Gothic church in Marchena, Spain.
Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is a Gothic church in Marchena featuring five naves of decreasing height, with the central section covered by intricate Mudejar wooden coffering and Gothic vaulted ceilings. A triple sanctuary and tower form the eastern end of the structure.
Construction started after Christian forces took control of Marchena in the 15th century, with the main nave, tower, and sanctuary completed by 1490. The lateral naves were added about 60 years later.
Inside are nine paintings by Francisco de Zurbarán from 1637, alongside works by Pedro de Mena and a Gothic main altarpiece by Jorge and Alejo Fernández. These artworks were brought together to decorate the church over many centuries.
Visitors should arrange an appointment in advance before entering the church, as it is not always open to individual visitors. It is best to contact local tourism offices to plan a visit properly.
The building holds two monumental organs: a Baroque instrument from 1675 and a Neoclassical piece from 1802, positioned on either side of an ornate wooden choir. These two organs represent distinct musical traditions from different centuries.
