Sörnäisten Kruununmakasiini

Sörnäisten Kruununmakasiini is a three-story brick building standing along Hämeentie street, marked by thick walls and small windows suited to its original purpose. Its strong construction matches the needs of storing grain collected as taxes.

The building was designed in 1892 by architect Hjalmar Åberg and served to store grain taxes until 1925 during Russian rule. After this period ended, it received new roles in the city's infrastructure.

The building shows how the city changed the way it managed resources and storage over time. It stands today as a quiet reminder of the economic needs a growing capital faced in the 1800s.

The building sits at the intersection of Hämeentie and Lautatarhankatu streets and is easy to reach by public transportation. Note that the interior is not open to the public, so visitors can only view it from outside.

Between 1926 and 1960, the building served as a prison holding the city's inmates. This surprising conversion shows how cities adapted spaces to meet new needs.
