Teurastamo, Former slaughterhouse turned dining hub in Hermanninmäki, Finland
Teurastamo is a former slaughterhouse in Helsinki that today houses restaurants, event spaces, and open areas within preserved industrial buildings from the early 20th century. Specialized food producers including a distillery, ice cream factory, coffee roastery, and bakery operate directly on the site.
The slaughterhouse opened in 1933 and served as an important production facility for the city until its closure in 1992. Conversion into a public space then began, preserving and revitalizing the site.
The site draws people interested in locally made food and artisanal production happening in real time. Regular markets and festivals connect visitors directly with producers who demonstrate their craft throughout the year.
The grounds are open during daytime hours and offer free barbecue facilities in the courtyard for visitors. You can rent a sauna if you want to relax with friends and refresh yourself in the historic setting.
The site preserves the architecture by architect Bertel Liljequist, who designed the slaughterhouse building in 1933. This preservation shows how Helsinki chose to protect an important industrial structure for future generations.
