Prieuré hospitalier de Bourganeuf, Hospital priory in Bourganeuf, France.
Prieuré hospitalier de Bourganeuf is a hospital priory comprising three towers and sections of fortified walls, with the Tower of Lastic serving as accommodation for travelers and patients. The complex buildings now house the town hall and a cinema.
The priory was established around 1310 and became the headquarters of the Auvergne commandery of the Knights Hospitallers in 1367. It maintained this role until its dissolution in 1787.
The attached Saint-Jean-Baptiste church displays a single-nave design with four bays and side chapels added in the late 15th century. This architectural expansion reflects the growing importance of the place as both a religious and medical center.
The site is easily accessible as the buildings now serve as public facilities and the medieval architecture remains visible from outside. The best time to visit is on weekends when the town hall is less busy and the outer structure can be better explored.
A distinctive part of the complex is the Zizim Tower, which held Ottoman prince Djem captive from 1486 to 1488. This political prisoner was later transferred to Pope Innocent VIII, marking a fascinating moment in European history.
