Cathédrales du Rail

Cathédrales du Rail are two parallel industrial buildings with glass-tiled facades, reinforced concrete structures, and 19-meter vaults forming a railway maintenance complex. The halls are being transformed into a new neighborhood with residential units, shops, and services across a large site near Gare du Nord.

Built in 1872 by Compagnie du Nord for locomotive maintenance, these halls shaped the site for over a century. The structure was damaged during war in 1944 and reconstructed in the 1950s.

The halls will house France's first museum dedicated to street art and hip-hop culture, with exhibition spaces and dance areas reflecting the city's creative scene. Visitors can experience here the living artistic movement that has shaped this neighborhood.

The site is relatively flat and easy to explore on foot, with multiple entrances making access straightforward. The best times to visit are morning or early afternoon, when natural light makes the glass facades particularly striking.

What makes this place remarkable is how natural light streams through the extensive glass tiles, creating cathedral-like illumination inside the vast industrial spaces. This interplay of light shifts with the time of day and weather, making each visit feel different.
