Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, Limestone cave system in Upper Swansea Valley, Wales
Ogof Ffynnon Ddu is a limestone cave system in the Upper Swansea Valley in Wales. It contains long passages with underground streams, waterfalls, and formations of stalactites and stalagmites shaped by water moving through the rock over very long periods of time.
Members of the South Wales Caving Club found this cave system in 1946 and went on to explore it in depth over the following decades. Their work helped establish the geological importance of the site and earned it protected status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The Welsh name translates to "Cave of the Black Spring", referring to the dark underground waters that give the system its character. This name has shaped how local people and cavers talk about the place to this day.
Access requires a permit from the South Wales Caving Club and appropriate caving equipment. The passages can be physically demanding, so prior experience in caving is strongly recommended before entering.
This cave system is the deepest in the entire United Kingdom, reaching down to 274 meters (about 900 feet). That vertical drop makes it stand apart from all other cave systems found across Britain.
