Tinside Lido, Art Deco lido in Plymouth, England.
Tinside Lido is a semicircular outdoor saltwater pool built into the rocky shoreline near Plymouth Sound in southwest England. The pool is set at sea level, giving swimmers the feeling of being just at the edge of the open water.
The lido opened in 1935, a time when outdoor public pools were being built across Britain to give working-class families access to swimming. After falling into disuse for many years, it was restored between 1998 and 2005 to bring it back to its original appearance.
On warm days, the pool draws families, locals, and visitors who come to swim in seawater with a view of the open sound. The setting makes it feel less like a sports facility and more like a place where people simply enjoy being near the sea together.
The pool is open only in the warmer months, so it is worth checking ahead before visiting. It sits right on the seafront promenade and is easy to find on foot from the town center.
The curved walls framing the pool entrance were designed to resemble the cutwater of a ship, a quiet nod to Plymouth's long history as a port city. From inside the pool, swimmers have a clear view of Smeaton's Tower standing on Plymouth Hoe across the water.
