Barmouth Bridge, Railway footbridge in Gwynedd, Wales
The Barmouth Bridge is a timber railway crossing over the Afon Mawddach estuary in Gwynedd, Wales. It connects Morfa Mawddach to Barmouth and extends for roughly 900 meters (around 2950 feet), with a walkway running alongside the tracks.
The Aberystwyth and Welsh Coast Railway built the crossing in the 19th century to secure the rail route along the coast. A movable steel section came in the early 20th century to allow boats through.
The bridge forms part of National Cycle Route 8, enabling pedestrians and cyclists to experience the Welsh coastline while crossing the estuary alongside trains.
A walkway runs beside the tracks and allows walkers and cyclists to cross the estuary on foot. A toll is collected at the entrance, with cyclists paying an extra amount.
Marine borers attack the timber constantly and force the rail company into ongoing repairs. The structure remains the longest of its type in Wales despite these challenges.
