Barnet Gate Mill, Grade II* listed windmill in London Borough of Barnet, England.
Barnet Gate Mill is a four-story grain mill in London Borough of Barnet with an ogee cap, a gallery, and four sails mounted on a cast iron shaft. Inside, a cast iron Wallower and wooden upright shaft work together to drive the millstones.
The mill was built between 1822 and 1840, initially powered entirely by wind for grain processing. In 1895, steam power was added to support its production capabilities.
The mill shows how grain was processed using traditional methods in England and represents the craftsmanship of an earlier era. From outside, visitors can appreciate how important such structures were to local communities.
The mill is privately owned and not open to the public, but you can view its exterior from nearby public roads. The best way to see the structure is to walk around the surrounding streets.
The mill underwent major restorations in 1930 and 1985, when a new cap, fantail, gallery, and replacement sails were installed. These efforts preserved the building for future generations.
