Church of St Matthew, Wookey

The Church of St Matthew in Wookey is a Norman building with a three-stage tower rising above the Somerset landscape. The tower features diagonal buttresses, pinnacles, and a crenellated top that display classic medieval architecture throughout the structure.

The church was founded in 1101 and underwent major rebuilding work to the nave and chancel from the late 1200s through the early 1400s. These changes show how the building evolved over time to meet the needs of the community.

Inside, visitors find a restored 13th-century font and several monuments, including a memorial to Thomas Clarke from the 16th century. These objects tell the stories of people who were connected to this place over the centuries.

The western tower ends with a polygonal spiral staircase and a delicate stone spire that shows refined details from the Perpendicular period. This rare architectural feature is easy to miss, but it proves the skilled craftsmanship invested in creating the building.
