Church of St Peter and St Paul, Muchelney

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a medieval parish church featuring a distinctive Somerset tower built in 1468. The tower has corner buttresses and an octagonal stair turret with an external doorway, while the interior preserves the sacred space with its original character.

The church was established in 1401 and stands next to the former Muchelney Abbey in Somerset. Over the centuries, it served as a hub of community life and has maintained its religious role to the present day.

The ceiling displays paintings of angels created in the early 17th century, reflecting the religious artistic tradition of that time. These works shape the interior and tell of the artistic devotion of earlier generations.

The church is open daily to visitors and can be reached on foot from the village center. The interior is straightforward to explore and offers a quiet setting to examine the historical features.

An organ instrument from the 1830s still operates in its original location and is one of the few of its kind still in use. This preserved musical instrument offers a rare glimpse into the acoustic history of the church.
