Covered Market

Covered Market is a building with cast iron pillars supporting a wood and glass roof that spans 27 meters without interior support columns. The structure continues to serve as a commercial center and sits in downtown Preston on Earl Street.

Construction began in the 19th century and was marked by setbacks, including a roof collapse, before contractor William Allsup completed the project in 1875. These delays reflected the technical challenges architects faced when building large roof structures of that era.

A bronze statue of Wallace and Gromit stands at the south entrance, honoring the connection to animator Nick Park who was born in Preston. The figures represent a local artist's legacy and show how the town celebrates its notable creators.

The building sits in the downtown area and is easy to reach on foot, with clear signage and access from several streets. Visitors should know it functions as an active marketplace, so opening hours may vary depending on individual traders.

The hall features a sophisticated drainage system where rainwater flows through concealed gutters inside the hollow support pillars. This hidden system shows how well-engineered the original construction was and how engineers solved problems with innovative methods.
