Dunster Working Watermill, Grade II listed watermill in Dunster, United Kingdom
Dunster Working Watermill is an operational grain mill with three floors of machinery powered by two large water wheels fed by the River Avill. Both wheels drive the grinding stones that continue to process grain using methods that have worked here for over 200 years.
This building dates from 1782 and replaced earlier medieval mills documented in the Domesday Book. It served the local community until 1962, when it closed before being restored as a working showcase.
The mill demonstrates how grain was traditionally processed by hand and machine, keeping alive the farming practices that once supported this Somerset village.
Visitors can explore the mill with guided tours and watch the grain grinding process in action. Freshly ground organic flour is available for purchase on site, so allow time to browse before leaving.
The building retains multiple sets of grinding stones capable of producing different flour grades simultaneously. Each year a substantial amount of organic grain is transformed into flour that gets sold to visitors.
