Devizes White Horse, Millennium chalk horse figure in Roundway Hill, England
The Devizes White Horse is a large chalk figure on Roundway Hill that shows the shape of a galloping horse. Volunteers from the area carefully carved the figure into the hillside, and it remains visible from the surrounding roads.
An original horse was cut into the chalk in 1845 by horse enthusiasts, but it faded over time. In 1999, a group of local residents created a new horse to celebrate the arrival of the new millennium.
The figure continues a long tradition in the region where residents have carved large chalk designs into hillsides for centuries. This horse is part of a special group of chalk figures in Wiltshire that shape the landscape and show how the community expresses its connection to this form of art.
This site is best visited from the A361 heading toward Swindon, turning toward Folly Road for a good view. You can see the figure clearly from public roads without needing to cross private land.
This horse is the only one in the county that faces right, while all other local chalk figures point in different directions. This distinctive feature makes it stand out among the collection of Wiltshire horses.
