Roundway Down and Covert

Roundway Down and Covert is a protected nature site near Devizes with chalk grassland, ancient woodlands, and varied habitats. The landscape spans several hectares and holds rare plant species alongside the remains of historic fortifications.

The site holds a triangular hillfort built between 800 and 450 BC by prehistoric people. Excavations there have uncovered settlement remains and pottery from the Bronze Age and Roman-British periods.

The name reflects the rolling downs and hidden natural spaces visitors find here. The landscape demonstrates how people have used this place across different periods, from grazing to conservation today.

The site can be explored on multiple walking paths that wind through different habitats and offer views of the surrounding landscape. Access is free, but the ground can be wet or uneven depending on the season, so sturdy shoes and weather protection are recommended.

At the highest point sit two burial mounds holding prehistoric cremation remains that were uncovered during archaeological work. These burial sites show how significant this elevated location was to the ancient inhabitants of the region.
