Dilham Castle, Medieval fortified manor in Norfolk, England
Dilham Castle is a fortified manor residence in Norfolk featuring a five-sided octagonal tower surrounded by protective walls. The construction combines flint and ashlar stonework and displays the typical features of a fortified dwelling from the 15th century.
Sir Henry Inglose built this fortified structure in the 15th century following his service under King Henry V in France. The building belongs to the same era as the nearby Caister Castle and represents one of the local monuments from that period.
The structure reflects how medieval lords blended fortification with comfortable living space in their homes. The layout and building techniques show the shift from purely defensive strongholds toward residential manor houses that nobles could actually inhabit.
The structure stands within Hall Farm property and is not freely accessible to visitors without the landowner's permission. Before planning a visit, you should contact the property owner to request access.
The tower retains an original medieval window with intricate broken tracery patterns, combining stonework from different periods. This window style reveals how the building transitioned from purely defensive to more residential purposes.
