Dilston Castle, 15th century tower house in Dilston, England
Dilston Castle is a three-story stone tower built in the 15th century and situated near Corbridge. The walls are constructed from squared stone with worked stone details, and medieval construction methods remain visible throughout the structure.
Sir William Claxton built the tower in the 15th century, and it became the Radcliffe family's property through marriage in 1621. Following the execution of the last Earl of Derwentwater for his role in a rebellion, the estate passed to Greenwich Hospital.
The chapel beside the tower shows how faith shaped the lives of the noble families who lived here. You can see how living quarters and a place for worship were closely connected.
The site is accessible from Corbridge via the B6529 road, then the A695 and B6307 roads lead to the entrance. The grounds are relatively flat, making it easy to walk around the exterior.
The tower's connection to the Catholic faith of the Radcliffe family is reflected in the chapel built beside it. This religious commitment was unusual and often practiced cautiously among English nobility during that period.
