Fort Rowner, Grade II military fort in Gosport, England
Fort Rowner features a central parade ground encircled by barrack casemates, with Haxo Casemates positioned above for artillery placement and defense purposes.
Constructed between 1858 and 1862 under architect William Crossman's direction, the fort formed part of the Gosport Advanced Line protecting Portsmouth harbor from land attacks.
The fort stands as a testament to Victorian military engineering, incorporating architectural elements such as underground vaulted passages and a double caponnier system.
Located within HMS Sultan Naval Base, Fort Rowner opens its doors to visitors exclusively during Heritage Open Days, offering guided tours of its historical structures.
A group of goats maintains the grassy ramparts of the fort, while half of its barrack rooms remain functional and the other half exist in various states of decay.
