The General Post Office in St. Martin's Le Grand is a Greek Revival building that served as London's main postal center. Its front features classical columns and a commanding portico that gives the structure its distinctive appearance.
The building was completed in 1829 by architect Robert Smirke and became the headquarters for British postal operations. It managed London's mail services for over 80 years before ceasing its role in 1910.
The Grand Public Hall maintained strict daily schedules, with mail coaches arriving between 5 and 6 AM for sorting and delivery by 8 AM.
The building sits centrally in St. Martin's Le Grand and is easy to reach. As a historic structure, public access is limited, so check ahead about visiting conditions.
Only an Ionic capital from the original 1829 structure survives today, kept at the Vestry House Museum in Walthamstow. This single architectural piece is a rare remnant of the building's former grandeur.
