General Post Office, London, Greek Revival postal building in St Martin's Le Grand, London, United Kingdom
The General Post Office featured a central hexastyle Greek Ionic portico with two flanking tetrastyle porticoes and a large central clock regulating operations.
The structure, completed in 1829 by architect Robert Smirke, functioned as the main post office and headquarters for British postal services until 1910.
The Grand Public Hall maintained strict daily schedules, with mail coaches arriving between 5 and 6 AM for sorting and delivery by 8 AM.
Three main divisions managed postal operations: the Inland Office, Foreign Office, and London District Office, each handling specific mail processing tasks.
The sole remaining element of the original 1829 building is an Ionic capital, now displayed at the Vestry House Museum in Walthamstow.
