Hazelbury Manor, Manor house in Box, England.
Hazelbury Manor is a Grade I listed manor house in the village of Box, in the English county of Wiltshire. The building is organized over three floors around a central courtyard, and the grounds also contain a coach house, stables, and formal gardens.
The manor traces its origins to the 13th century, when it was founded by the Croke family. In the 1920s, George Jardine Kidston carried out a major renovation that shaped much of what visitors see today.
The estate gardens hosted open-air Shakespeare performances every summer from 1993 to 2010, with audiences gathering on the lawn in front of the stone facade. This tradition gave the place a role in local cultural life that went well beyond its function as a private residence.
The property is primarily a private residence, so it is worth checking in advance whether and when it is open to visitors. Sturdy footwear is helpful, as the paths through the grounds can be uneven.
The estate contains a restored 17th-century Dower House that is physically connected to the main building. This kind of joined arrangement, designed to let older family members live close to the next generation, is now rarely found intact in a private property.
