Happy Valley Park, Nature reserve in Old Coulsdon, United Kingdom
Happy Valley Park is a large nature reserve in Coulsdon featuring chalk grasslands, wooded slopes, and walking trails across different habitats. The site spreads over wide open meadows and dense woodland sections that create diverse ecosystems throughout the grounds.
The site became part of the public green space system in 1937 when the council acquired it through a protection scheme. This decision was part of a broader effort to preserve natural areas around London at that time.
The park serves as a meeting place where residents and visitors spend time walking, exercising, and taking part in community activities. Different areas are used for picnics, explorations, and simply enjoying open space throughout the seasons.
The area is accessible from Fox Lane or by bus number 60 from Coulsdon South train station. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as the paths cross uneven slopes and can become slippery during wet weather.
Devilsden Wood within the park is home to rare plant species like man orchid and round-headed rampion that thrive in the chalk soil. These particular plants are scarce across southern England and make this woodland area of special scientific importance.
