Old Ironstone Works, Mells, Industrial archaeological site in Wadbury Valley, Somerset, England
The Old Ironstone Works consists of stone buildings, abandoned tunnels, and manufacturing structures spread across a quarter-hectare of protected land near Mells Stream.
The Fussell family established this iron manufacturing facility in 1744, producing agricultural tools that were exported worldwide until the business ceased operations in 1894.
The industrial remains represent the transformation of rural Somerset during the Industrial Revolution, when water-powered manufacturing facilities dominated the landscape.
Visitors should note that the site is currently fenced off and under renovation, with the nearest parking available in the village of Mells.
The abandoned buildings and tunnels now serve as essential winter hibernation spots and summer breeding areas for Greater and Lesser Horseshoe bats.
