St Andrew's Church

St Andrew's Church is a medieval parish church in Mells featuring a west tower with Perpendicular carvings and a fan vaulted porch entrance. The spacious interior displays a multicolored marble altar alongside eight change ringing bells and a two-manual pipe organ from 1880 built by Vowles.

The church was built around 1450 and maintained close connections with Glastonbury Abbey. This relationship with the nearby monastery shaped the building's early significance and development.

The church grounds hold memorials to notable figures, including poet Siegfried Sassoon, and an equestrian statue by Alfred Munnings honoring Edward Horner. These monuments reflect the place's deep ties to prominent local families and their contributions to the area.

Entry is available during opening hours, and visitors should allow time to explore both the interior and outdoor memorials. The building is easily reached from the village street and serves as a good starting point for understanding the local architecture and heritage of Mells.

The building houses a tapestry created after Burne-Jones designs and a bronze wreath by Edwin Lutyens. These artworks reveal the church's connections to prominent designers and artists of the 20th century.
