Saxtead Green Windmill
Saxtead Green Windmill, Post mill in Saxtead Green, England
Saxtead Green Windmill is a wooden structure with three floors mounted on a central post that can rotate to face the wind. The building features four patent sails and internal machinery designed for grinding grain into flour.
The mill was built in 1796 and operated continuously until 1947, serving farmers throughout the region. Its long working life spanned changes in agricultural methods and milling technology.
The mill reflects the working relationship between local farmers and millers that shaped rural life for generations. It represents the importance of grain processing to the community's food supply and daily routines.
Access to the mill is seasonal, with regular opening times during warmer months on specific days of the week. Visitors should check ahead before visiting and allow time to explore the working machinery throughout the building.
The mill features a six-bladed fantail that automatically positions itself to align the sails with the wind direction. This mechanical system allowed the mill to operate efficiently without requiring constant manual adjustment.
