St John's Jerusalem, Medieval chapel and garden in Sutton-at-Hone, England
St John's Jerusalem is a medieval chapel set within a garden in Sutton-at-Hone, surrounded by a moat fed by the River Darent. The grounds feature mature trees and mixed planting beds throughout.
The chapel was built in 1199 as part of a Commandery for the Knights Hospitaller and served this military religious order. Over time, sections of the structure were converted into residential spaces.
The name refers to Saint John and reflects the presence of the Knights Hospitaller in medieval England. Visitors can see how the religious architecture and garden design were shaped by this monastic tradition.
The site can be visited from April through September on Wednesday afternoons between 14:00 and 18:00, with shorter hours in October. Checking ahead about opening days is wise, as access is limited to specific times.
The property retains its original moat system from the 13th century, creating an enclosed garden space. This historic water feature physically separates the area and gives it a distinctly contained character.
