St Andrew's Church, Gunton, Grade I listed Anglican church in Gunton, England
St Andrew's Church in Gunton is an Anglican church building featuring classical design with a tetrastyle Doric portico and walls of gault brick with stone details. The structure combines simple geometric forms with crafted details that emphasize its Palladian style.
Sir William Harbord commissioned this church in 1767 to replace a medieval predecessor, selecting Robert Adam as the architect. The new building marked a shift from Gothic tradition to the rational classicism of the 18th century.
The interior features a oak reredos adorned with gilded Corinthian columns and a central painting of the Virgin and Child above the altar. This religious artwork shapes the devotional space and reflects the artistic care of the original design.
The building is open daily to visitors and parking is available near the cattle grid at the entrance. From there, a footpath leads through a metal gate directly to the church building.
This is the only complete church building designed by Robert Adam in England and his sole example of this type in Norfolk. This rare combination makes it a special example of Adam's work in religious architecture.
