St Mary Magdalene's Church, Battlefield, Medieval church in Battlefield, Shrewsbury, England
St Mary Magdalene's Church, Battlefield is a medieval church built in the English Gothic style, located just north of Shrewsbury. It has a square tower with buttresses, a five-bay chancel, and a four-bay nave.
The church was founded in 1406 as a memorial to the dead of the Battle of Shrewsbury, fought on this ground in 1403. Henry IV ordered its construction after his forces defeated Henry Hotspur Percy at that location.
The stained glass windows inside show biblical scenes and remain in good condition today. The decorated floor tiles add to the medieval feel of the interior and give the building a coherent visual character.
The building is not always open to visitors, and access requires picking up a key from the nearby Battlefield 1403 Farm Shop. It is worth contacting the shop before your visit to make sure entry will be possible.
Inside the church stands a carved oak Pieta from the 1400s that was moved here from another religious building. Sculptures of this kind surviving from that period are very rarely found in English churches.
