Capel Manor House, Grade II* listed building in Horsmonden, England
Capel Manor House is a steel-framed residence with horizontal lines, bronze-tinted glass walls, and a cantilevered roof perched on a raised platform. The building overlooks the Kent countryside and features net curtaining throughout its glass walls to maintain privacy.
Michael Manser designed this modern building in 1970 for MP John Howard. It replaced a 1860s Italian Gothic mansion that Thomas Henry Wyatt had designed.
The residence shows modern design principles that contrast with the Victorian garden forms surrounding it. Visitors can see how contemporary architecture coexists with older landscape elements.
The building sits on a raised platform, something to keep in mind when arriving. Visitors should note that the extensive glass surfaces mean indoor and outdoor spaces are visually connected.
Parts of the original colonnades from the former winter garden now surround an outdoor pool. These architectural elements connect the site's past with its present use.
