Stansted Airport Transit System, Automated guideway transit at London Stansted Airport, United Kingdom
The Stansted Airport Transit System is an automated people mover that connects the main terminal with two satellite buildings at London Stansted Airport. The route travels above ground on elevated tracks and below ground through tunnels, linking passenger areas where gates 1-19 and gates 20-39 are located.
The system was designed in 1991 by the British Airports Authority as part of a major modernization program for the airport. It was built to solve the challenge of connecting distant terminal sections that previously required bus transfers between buildings.
The transit network represents modern transportation infrastructure integration, connecting passengers to different sections of the airport through automated technology.
The transit is free to all passengers who have passed through security and requires no additional ticket. Trains operate at frequent intervals throughout the day, making transfers between terminal areas fast and simple.
The vehicles are Adtranz C-100 models, which are the last of their kind still operating regularly anywhere in the world. These trains were specially designed for the airport and represent a generation of technology from the 1990s that has since become obsolete elsewhere.
