Stonyhurst, Historic estate in Clitheroe, England.
Stonyhurst encompasses approximately 1,000 acres of countryside featuring a Grade I listed Elizabethan mansion, Jesuit boarding school, preparatory facilities, and extensive grounds bordered by the River Hodder.
The estate dates back to around 1200 AD when known as Stanihurst, passing through the Bayley and Shireburn families before Thomas Weld donated it to the Jesuits in 1794.
The grounds feature numerous religious monuments including the Lady Statue erected in 1882, Anglo-Saxon Saint Paulinus Cross, and various memorial crosses reflecting centuries of Catholic heritage and devotion.
Visitors can explore the college through guided tours during summer months, participate in walking trails including the Tolkien Trail, and attend events like the Great British Food Festival.
The estate houses one of the world's oldest continuous temperature recording observatories established in 1838, still providing climate data to the Met Office for central England today.
