The earliest sections of this residential structure date to the 17th century, and the building received its Grade II listing status in September 1978.
The house represents the maritime traditions of Portland, where sea captains and their families established residences near the water during previous centuries.
While the exterior of the building remains visible to visitors, the interior spaces are not accessible as The Captain's House serves as a private residence.
After falling into ruins following the death of John Comben Lano in 1866, the building underwent complete restoration work from 1995 to 1998.
