Verne Citadel

Verne Citadel is a military fortress built from local limestone on a hilltop overlooking Portland Harbour. The site contains numerous buildings, defensive walls, and prison structures that were added and modified over the years to serve different purposes.

Construction began in 1857 and finished in 1869 as a response to security concerns during the Victorian era. After its military purpose declined, it was converted into a prison, which fundamentally changed its use and function.
