Dover Priory, Medieval priory ruins in Dover, England
Dover Priory is the remains of a Benedictine monastery that once stood near the town center. Sections of walls and parts of the dining hall still stand today, showing how the buildings were originally arranged.
The monastery was founded in 1101 and developed into a major religious center for the region. After dissolution during the Reformation, the remains survived as a record of its medieval past.
The priory was an important spiritual center where monks lived and prayed daily. The ruins today show how these religious communities organized their daily lives in medieval times.
The site is within walking distance from Dover Priory railway station and easy to reach. The ruins are open to the outdoors, so waterproof clothing is advisable in wet or windy conditions.
The monastic community originally came from France and brought continental building traditions with them. These influences shaped the design of the surviving structures.
