Dover Western Heights

Dover Western Heights is a military fortification complex perched on the hilltop overlooking Dover's port, featuring an intricate network of defensive ditches, underground passages, and fortified positions. The structures span across the elevated terrain and showcase defensive engineering from different historical periods.

Construction of the fortifications began in 1779 and underwent major expansion during the Napoleonic Wars to defend against potential French invasion. Subsequent modifications continued as military threats and defensive strategies evolved over the decades.

The Western Heights Preservation Society organizes educational tours and events to share the military heritage of these defensive structures with visitors.

The Grand Shaft contains a remarkable triple spiral staircase that allowed soldiers to descend in separate columns between the hilltop and sea level, a clever solution for moving military personnel through steep terrain.
