Tiverton Castle, Medieval castle in Tiverton, England.
Tiverton Castle is a stone castle in Tiverton, Devon, England, standing on the banks of the River Exe. Portions of the defensive walls, several towers, and a mix of buildings from different periods remain on the grounds today.
The castle was founded in 1106 by Richard de Redvers under King Henry I to control the region. It suffered serious damage during the English Civil War in the 17th century, when Parliamentary forces besieged and took it.
The castle holds a collection of weapons and household objects from the English Civil War period, displayed in rooms that still feel like living spaces. Visitors can also learn about the medieval noble families who shaped life in Devon through the objects left behind.
The castle is open to visitors from April through October, generally in the afternoons, and guided tours are available on site. Self-catering accommodation can be booked within the grounds for those who want to stay overnight.
During the Civil War siege, a single cannonball struck the drawbridge chain, and that one shot gave Parliamentary troops an opening to take the castle quickly. What could have been a long confrontation ended almost by chance.
