Tiverton Castle, Medieval castle in Tiverton, England.
Tiverton Castle is a stone fortress situated on the banks of the River Exe with remaining sections of defensive walls, period buildings, and several towers scattered across the site. The layout shows how the structure once protected the area through its fortification design.
The castle was founded in 1106 by Richard de Redvers under King Henry I to control the surrounding region. During the English Civil War in the 1600s, it experienced significant damage from military siege and bombardment.
The castle displays weapons and furnishings from the English Civil War period, along with information about medieval noble families in Devon. Visitors can see how these families lived through objects and household items displayed throughout the rooms.
The site is open to visitors from April through October in the afternoon hours and offers guided tours to help you understand the layout. Self-catering lodging is available on the grounds if you wish to stay overnight.
A single cannon shot during the siege struck the drawbridge chain mechanism, giving Parliamentary forces an unexpected advantage that led to rapid capture. This chance occurrence ended the military confrontation without prolonged fighting.
