The Falcon, Chester

The Falcon, Chester, Medieval pub in Chester, England

The Falcon is a medieval pub housed in a black and white half-timbered building with two storeys, sandstone foundations, and two prominent gables on Lower Bridge Street. The structure displays traditional craftsmanship throughout its exterior and layout.

The building started as a house around 1200 and was rebuilt during the 13th century, later becoming linked to the Grosvenor family after 1602. These transformations reflect the changing uses of Chester's oldest structures over the centuries.

The interior preserves original stone piers and timber dividers that visitors can still see today, showing how medieval Chester buildings were constructed and divided for use.

The pub sits at the corner with Grosvenor Road and is easy to find from the main street. Be aware that medieval buildings have low doorways and uneven flooring, so watch your step when entering and moving around inside.

Below street level sits a medieval undercroft that now serves as a beer cellar, built with octagonal stone piers and a central oak beam. This hidden space reveals construction methods that were common in medieval basements.
