The Granville Hotel, Victorian apartment building in Ramsgate, England
The Granville Hotel is a Victorian apartment building in Ramsgate designed in the Gothic Revival style, spanning eight adjoining houses as a single unified structure. The four-story building with basement now contains 48 self-contained flats managed by individual leaseholders.
The building opened in 1869 as a hotel and was repurposed during World War I to serve as a hospital for Canadian soldiers. After 1946 it was converted into residential apartments where it remains today.
This building reflects the Victorian image of a 19th-century English seaside resort and carries the design principles of that era's coastal development in its architecture. The style shapes the character of this part of Ramsgate even today.
The building can be viewed from outside to appreciate its Gothic Revival details and architectural features, though access to individual flats is limited as these are private residences. The structure's exterior is best observed while walking along the seafront area.
The building originally housed luxurious Victorian Turkish baths offering a variety of bathing options and a seawater plunge pool that remained in use until 1980. These elaborate facilities have long since disappeared from the site.
