Polka Theatre, Children's theatre in Wimbledon, England
Polka Theatre is a children's theatre on The Broadway in Wimbledon, in the London Borough of Merton. It has two separate performance spaces, each set up to suit a different age range within the zero to twelve years bracket.
The theatre was founded in Wimbledon in the late 20th century with a clear focus on young audiences from the start. It grew into one of the first venues in England dedicated entirely to theatre for children.
The Polka Theatre regularly offers shows and workshops that bring children from infancy into contact with live performance. Young audiences are encouraged to take part directly rather than just watch from their seats.
The theatre is open Tuesday through Sunday and has an on-site cafe where visitors can have refreshments before or after a show. Booking in advance is a good idea, especially for weekend performances, which tend to fill up quickly.
The smaller of the two performance spaces is designed specifically for babies and toddlers under three, with soft flooring and a stage at their eye level. Dedicated spaces for very young children are extremely rare in theatres anywhere in the world.
