Plas Newydd, Historic house museum in Llangollen, Wales.
Plas Newydd is a former residence in Llangollen featuring black and white timber decoration, stained glass, and carved wooden details sourced from diverse architectural origins. The rooms contain furnishings and objects collected over time from many different places.
Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby moved to this place in 1780 and gradually transformed the simple stone cottage into an elaborate decorated house over several decades. Their decades-long residency left a lasting mark on the area's story.
The residence attracted writers and poets from across Britain who came to visit its famous inhabitants. It served as a salon where intellectual life flourished in this small Welsh town.
The house is open to visitors from March through October with guided tours available through its rooms. A tea room is located on site and the gardens sit next to a riverside walking path.
The two women chose to live together as a couple at a time when this was highly unconventional for their social standing. Despite strict expectations of the era, they managed to build their lives on their own terms.
