St Mary's Church, Walmer

St Mary's Church in Walmer is an Anglican church with a tall nave featuring clerestory windows, narrow side aisles, and a three-bay baptistery section. The interior is divided by an alabaster screen that separates the chancel from the main worship space.

Arthur Blomfield designed this church in 1887 to serve the growing local population. It was built alongside the older St Mary's Church and St Saviour's Church to meet the needs of an expanding community.

The west window shows scenes from Christ's life connected to the sea, reflecting how this coastal town has always been linked to maritime life. This visual reminder shapes the character of the interior space.

The church maintains detailed parish registers dating back to 1560, recording information from both St Mary's buildings. These historical documents offer a window into the community's long presence in the area.

The sanctuary floor features brown opus sectile tiling, a rare technique using cut stone pieces arranged in geometric patterns. This intricate stonework is often overlooked despite being a remarkable decorative detail.
